Case Study — Offshore Oil & Gas
Integrated Maritime Domain Awareness
A multisensor monitoring and security solution for three offshore production assets
Sector
Offshore Oil & Gas
Project Type
Maritime Monitoring & Security
Scope
Three offshore assets
NGS designed and implemented an Integrated Maritime Monitoring System that combines long-range detection, vessel identification, visual verification and real-time command and control within one coherent operational environment.
The solution provides security teams with a unified operational picture of the maritime area surrounding three offshore energy assets. Multiple surveillance technologies are correlated in real time, enabling operators to detect, identify, track and assess vessels and other potential threats approaching the protected facilities.
Offshore production facilities operate in a demanding environment where security teams must monitor wide maritime areas, distinguish routine traffic from unauthorized activity and maintain continuous awareness despite darkness, reduced visibility and severe marine conditions.
- Provide reliable long-range surveillance in an exposed marine environment.
- Combine information from different sensors into one coherent operational picture.
- Support automatic detection together with rapid visual verification of targets.
- Preserve local monitoring and recording capability at each offshore asset.
- Minimize installation risk and disruption to ongoing production operations.
NGS delivered a distributed, multisensor Maritime Domain Awareness architecture. Each offshore asset operates as an autonomous surveillance node while sharing a consistent command-and-control environment and common operating procedures.
Asset Configuration
1 FPSO and 2 CSPs
Radar Coverage
Up to 94 nautical miles (NM)
Electro-Optical Coverage
Up to 24 nautical miles (NM)
Operational Control
Command & Control Centre onboard the FPSO; remote monitoring of camera imagery and radar tracks from the Lagos head office
Scalability
Supports future oilfield expansion
Long-range surveillance radar
Detection and continuous tracking of vessels within the monitored area.
Electro-optical and infrared cameras
Day-and-night target identification and visual assessment.
Automatic Identification System (AIS)
Identification and correlation of cooperative vessels.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
Real-time display of targets, protected areas, routes and operational zones.
Command-and-Control platform
Sensor correlation, alarm management and a unified maritime operating picture.
Local recording and storage
Incident review, investigation and operational reporting at asset level.
Fibre-optic communications
Secure, high-capacity connectivity between sensors, control equipment and workstations.
Radar, EO/IR and AIS information is collected and processed locally at each offshore asset, then correlated within the Command-and-Control platform. Operators receive a single real-time view combining radar tracks, AIS identities, camera imagery and geographic information.
Detect
Long-range radar establishes and maintains target tracks.
Correlate
AIS and GIS information enrich each track with identity and location context.
Verify
EO/IR sensors provide day-and-night visual confirmation.
Respond
The C2 platform manages alarms, operator actions and incident evidence.
The distributed architecture preserves local operational capability and event recording at each asset. Its modular design also supports future expansion, additional sensors and integration with higher-level security or operational centres.
The system was engineered for deployment in an active offshore environment, with particular attention to marine exposure, operational continuity, HSE requirements and hazardous-area constraints. Where required, clamp-based mounting solutions reduced the need for hot work and limited the impact on existing structures and operations.
Installation, integration and commissioning activities were coordinated to minimize offshore intervention time and execution risk.
- Continuous surveillance around three offshore production assets.
- Earlier detection and sustained tracking of approaching vessels.
- Rapid correlation of radar, AIS, visual and geographic information.
- Day-and-night target verification and centralized alarm management.
- Locally available recordings and operational evidence.
- A scalable platform for future security-system expansion.
